Why Do You Give to Arlington Street Church?

Frequently Asked Questions

What do we mean by “Covenant Renewal?”

The guiding star for community life at Arlington Street is our covenant: “to dwell together in peace, speak our truths in love, and help one another.” We recite this commitment each week in worship, and practice it as we care for our building, participate in church programming, and serve our larger community.

Each year, we renew our commitment to this covenant as we make pledges of financial support. As part of the free church tradition, all of the funding to bring our covenant to life comes from us. There is no larger denominational body underwriting our operations. Arlington Street’s annual budget is $775,000, and there are nearly 150 individuals and families who currently pledge. As we hear each Sunday, “It’s up to us!”

What is Covenant Renewal Sunday?

Covenant Renewal Sunday is our annual celebration of generosity when we come together to make the pledges that will fund the ministry of Arlington Street Church for the coming year. This festive and moving service takes place on or around the first Sunday of March. That said, pledges for the current or coming year can be made at any time.

What is a Pledge?

A pledge is our intention to give a certain amount over time.

These commitments allow our congregation’s leaders to plan responsibly and support the programs, staff, and ministries that sustain and grow our community.

How much should I pledge?

This year’s Covenant Renewal pledging goal is $400K, an 8% increase. We are not asking everyone to increase their pledge by 8%. We are asking you to consider how much you can contribute to our reaching that goal, reflecting on what Arlington Street Church means in your life.

What you pledge is entirely up to you, and all gifts are deeply appreciated.

For more on determining the right pledge amount for you, check out this Fair Share Contribution Guide.

How much do others pledge?

Last year, the median pledge was about $1,000—meaning half of pledges were above this amount and half were below. The average pledge did not increase from the previous church year.

Here is how pledges were distributed:

  • 103 people pledged between $1 and $2,160

  • 26 pledged between $2,160 and $5,000

  • 13 pledged between $5,000 and $11,000

  • 5 pledged more than $11,000

Those five highest pledges account for 25% of our total pledging dollars. This does not mean any pledge is more important than another—every pledge matters and is deeply valued. At the same time, we recognize that we rely heavily on a small number of larger pledges (a risk), and that increasing pledges in the lower quartiles would strengthen our financial sustainability (an opportunity).

Is pledging only for members?

Absolutely not! Anyone who wants to support and sustain this beloved community is welcome to make a pledge. You don’t need to be a member to pledge, but if you are a member, your pledge is your annual affirmation that you plan to continue your membership.

How do I pay my pledge?

Most people pay their pledge monthly. Setting up automated payments from a bank account or credit card helps the church ensure a steady cash flow throughout the year. Many donors choose to cover the small administrative fee associated with these payments, which adds up to a significant savings of over $10,000 in the church budget each year. Both recurring and one-time gifts can be made at tinyurl.com/GiveASC.

Some people pay their pledge all at once and others prefer to put their pledge payment in the collection plate each week. Please choose whatever works best for you!

What if I can’t pay my pledge?

A pledge is a commitment, not a contract. If something changes with your financial situation, you can always let us know that you need to adjust your pledge. In this case for you, feel free to speak with the treasurer or one of our ministers.

You are also welcome to give more than the amount of your pledge – many of our devoted donors do each year!

Is my contribution tax deductible?

Yes! Arlington Street Church is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Tax ID # 04-2147961). Gifts to Arlington Street are tax deductible and always received with deep gratitude!

What is Arlington Street’s fiscal year?

Our fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 each year.
